As the author of more than 25 nationally acclaimed African-American romance titles, including Vows, Hidden Agenda, Rosie’s Curl and Weave, Summer Magic, Welcome To Leo’s, and the Hideaway series, Rochelle Alers is one of the genre’s best-selling writers. She was voted Arabesque Books’ Most Popular Author in the 1995-96 reader survey, was declared among the Top Five Most Popular African-American romance writers in 1999, by Heart & Soul online magazine, among other honors, and a 2000 Gold Pen Award winner for best contemporary romance for Harvest Moon.
She has been nominated for a Romantic Times Career Achievement Award and picked up her second Gold Pen Award in 2001 for Welcome To Leo’s. She is also the winner of the first prestigious Vivian Stephens Career Achievement Award for Excellence in Romance Fiction and eight Emma Awards: Favorite Romance Heroine (Sara Sterling – Just Before Dawn), Favorite Thriller, Killer Adventure Romance (Just Before Dawn), Favorite All-Nighter Romance (Just Before Dawn), Favorite Romance Anthologies (Della’s House of Style, Welcome To Leo’s and Going To The Chapel), Favorite Sequel (No Compromise) and Favorite Hero (Michael Kirkland – No Compromise).
Rochelle’s books have consistently made best-selling lists: #7 (Vows) Ingram Top 50, #1 Essence and Blackboard for Rosie’s Curl and Weave, Della’s House of Style; 5 Stars from Affair de Coeur for Summer Magic, Harvest Moon, Private Passions, and Just Before Dawn.
No Compromise is listed as an Ingram Top 100 best-selling books for 2002. Many of her titles have gone into multiple printings, been selected for the Doubleday, Black Expressions, and Literary Guild Book Clubs. Her name and titles have appeared in articles in Publishers Weekly, Heart and Soul, Upscale and The Writer. The cover of Hidden Agenda appeared on the cover of Publishers Weekly while Happily Ever After has been translated into Spanish and German. The African Heritage Network has optioned her Kwanzaa-theme novella, “First Fruits” for a made-for-television movie.
As an insatiable reader of romance novels, Alers longed for stories reflecting the lives and loves of women of color. She entered the market in the late 1980’s, authoring the best-selling Hideaway, which became the cornerstone of an internationally popular ten-book series. The Hideaway Legacy now includes four titles in the “First Generation,” three titles in the “Daughters and Sisters Trilogy,” and concludes with the last three titles in the “Sons and Brothers Trilogy.” She is currently writing category romance for Silhouette Desire and women’s fiction for Simon and Schuster’s Pocket Books.
